letter to ADF...

I was shocked to hear that the Australian Defence Force (ADF) has refused to stop using live animals in trauma training.

All the trauma training skills needed by the ADF can be effectively taught on simulators, including those already approved by the American College of Surgeons. By continuing to mutilate and kill animals when other options are readily available, the ADF appears to be in breach of the National Health and Medical Research Council's guidelines.

More modern training methods that use technology relevant to human health have already been adopted by the majority of NATO nations, and the worldwide standard for military trauma training does not include training on animals.

Please stop using live animals in these cruel and invasive exercises.

I lived in Australia for awhile, a couple years ago and one thing that really struck me about Aussie culture is that you are an animal loving culture. Your country is known globally for its animal activism and you should be proud of that. The UK also has this distinction on the international stage and it doesn't do a country any harm to be known as a progressive nation.

The ADF is also, in my mind, a very respectable and progressive force and I think that it wouldn't do it any good to be known for this kind of barbaric reputation.

Think about it.
